MY FINANCIAL JOURNEY: Step 1

Understanding the Financial Aid process can be daunting to the average student or even their parents. Following the required procedures in the proper order is essential to making this endeavor easier though. Before any of the steps below can be completed, you must first complete and submit your FAFSA (Free Application For Student Aid) and then allow time for our office to send you further instructions. The entire SUM Financial Aid process (including Parent Plus or Verification requests) can potentially take 3-4 weeks and your financial aid must be solidified in advance to avoid you having to pay out of pocket.

Be sure not to jump steps and you'll be just fine.

Before you can set realistic financial goals, you must first discover what aid you qualify for. This requires that you visit our Virtual Financial Aid Office and complete your "Student Interview."

It gets a little wordy here, so take your time to read the details first.

To complete your Virtual Financial Aid Office "Student Interview" go to https://sum.vfao.com and "register" to create your personal Username and Password if you don’t already have one. Then immediately go to the "Student Interview Center" link to begin the process. YOU WILL NEED YOUR EFC NUMBER from your FAFSA Student Aid Report to complete the online interview. Please be certain that you choose the 2016-2017 school year option.


Under “Program of Study”:

Those students enrolling in the BA Degree Program (standard 3 year program) must select one of two options:

  1. BA Biblical Studies - for those required to attend the Mardi Gras Outreach (mainly first and second year students)

OR

      2.  BA Biblical Studies: NO MARDI GRAS for those who have completed the Mardi Gras requirement. 


Regardless of which degree program you are pursuing you will need to choose the appropriate terms that you will be attending when completing your interview. These steps are required if you desire aid of any kind while attending SUM Bible College & Theological Seminary (SUM)

Please be sure to request sufficient financial aid for the entire school year.  Select “Grants and Loans” as your Processing Option unless you are prepared to pay the difference out of pocket the first day of each term.  SUM costs roughly $12,000 per year (including the Mardi Gras Outreach) for on-campus students and $2,400 less for commuters and cohort students.

The ESTIMATED annual Pell Grant maximum for 2016-17 is only $5,815 per year which is not sufficient to meet the financial requirements of attending SUM. Simply stated, no students are able to afford tuition on Grants Only. Be sure to also review the VFAO website FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) at any time during the financial aid process to obtain the majority of the answers you need.
